Sutter owned about 48,000 acres in the great Central Valley of California and collaborated with millwright James W. Marshall to build a sawmill in the nearby outpost of present-day Coloma.


James Marshall's discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in California in 1848, started the California Gold Rush. Born in 1810, Marshall followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a skilled carpenter and wheelwright. When his father died in 1834, he headed westward, spending some time in Illinois and Indiana before settling in Missouri.

The name Sutter's Mill has been well capitalized and now is the name of a steakhouse/restaurant in the area. Many other businesses took on the handle of "Sutter's Mill" as a result of the gold find and still take the name to this day even though the gold rush is long over.
