About Us - VIPMA

Placer mining (pronounced "plass-er") is the mining of alluvial deposits for minerals. This may be done by open-pit (also called open-cast mining) or by various forms of tunneling into ancient riverbeds. Excavation may be accomplished using water pressure (hydraulic mining) surface excavating equipment or tunneling equipment.

Placer mining can be as simple as using a shovel and a gold pan in a creek. On a placer claim, hand-mining a deposit of any size usually involves a sluice box or highbanker, and a water pump . A machine-digging operation generally uses a backhoe or larger excavator and a more sophisticated "wash plant" for separating the gold from the pay dirt.

In large-scale mining operations, wash ing plants and dredges are used. For the purposes of this report, the recovery of placer gold will be lim ited to panning, rocking, and sluicing. Because gold has a high specific gravity and is chemically inert, it becomes concentrated in placer deposits, where it commonly is found associated with 5
